Sons & Lovers: The Centenary Conference

This day-long conference celebrates the centenary publication of D. H. Lawrence’s ground-breaking novel Sons and Lovers (1913). A masterpiece of modernist fiction, arguably the greatest British novel of working-class life published in the twentieth century, a bold meditation on fraught familial relations, an erotically charged bildungsroman, denounced on publication as “decadent,” hailed by Virginia Woolf for its author’s “curious and exciting power of highlighting the heat of life,” Sons and Lovers remains enduringly vital. This conference brings together prominent scholars, critics, and writers from Britain and the United States to explore Lawrence’s uniquely powerful achievement.
